Callum McGregor lifted by Celtic reaction to ‘slap round the face’ derby defeat

Celtic captain Callum McGregor has been encouraged by the reaction of his team-mates to the pain of last weekend’s defeat by Rangers.

A 3-0 loss at Ibrox came after Celtic had already retained the cinch Premiership title and beaten their Glasgow rivals in both cup competitions.

Only Inverness can now stop Celtic winning the treble by clinching the Scottish Cup too, but the overall picture did not stop the derby defeat from hurting.

Speaking ahead of Saturday’s visit of St Mirren, McGregor said: “Training has been good the last few days, there has been a bit of a reaction, and back in front of our home supporters, we want to go out and show them that reaction from last weekend and put in a good performance and get maximum points.

Blatter hints at FIFA stay

FIFA president Sepp Blatter says only illness will prevent him from running for the organisation s leadership for a fifth time.

Blatter pledged in 2011 that this term would be his last in charge of world football s governing body.

But the 77-year-old appears set to go back on his promise after admitting to Swiss radio station RTS that he would like to stay on in the job.

If I have the health – and I am currently in good health – I don t see why I would stop the work. A work which continues, Blatter said.

FIFA needs consolidation. Many people say it needs to be continued.

I will not shout I m candidate but if the members associations ask it to me, then I will not say no.

FIFA s leadership will be taken to a poll in May 2015, a time when Blatter, w…

To become a legend, to become great, you have to also win the World Cup, he said in an interview with El Mundo newspaper.

He is now being compared to compatriot and legend Diego Maradona, who won the World Cup with Argentina in 1986.

Everything is happening so fast and I must stay calm, the 2009 Golden Ball winner told El Mundo.

What a player! said Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, a Barcelona supporter.

I especially noticed his humility. I li…

Wolves set Neves price

Wolverhampton Wanderers value Ruben Neves at around £110million, according to .

Neves had been linked with the likes of Manchester United and Liverpool after his notable performances last season in the Championship as Wolves secured promotion, but when the summer transfer window came he dashed all their hopes by with the club. This has, naturally, raised the club s valuation of the player significantly, and now reports have linked him with Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester City.

City manager Pep Guardiola has been on the lookout for a long-term replacement for the aging Fernandinho. City lost out on the transfers of Fred and Jorginho to United and Chelsea, respectively, and with Fabian Delph acting more as a backup for left back Benjamin Mendy than a central midfiel…

Juventus 3-2 Sampdoria: Dybala injury overshadows Bianconeri win in Allegri´s landmark match

Paulo Dybala left the pitch in tears after scoring the opening goal as Juventus beat Sampdoria 3-2 in Massimiliano Allegri s 400th Serie A game in charge.

Dybala showed his class with a great finish but was forced off midway through the first half three days before a Champions League clash with Chelsea, having seemingly sustained a muscular problem.

Leonardo Bonucci doubled Juve s lead from the penalty spot, but Maya Yoshida s header gave Samp hope just before half-time at the Allianz Stadium on Sunday.

Manuel Locatelli s first goal for the Bianconeri gave them breathing space and although Antonio Candreva s strike set up a tense finale, the Turin giants secured a back-to-back Serie A home wins – and their first at home this season – in boss Allegri s land…

International Friendly: South Africa 1 Spain 0

Spain s return to the scene of their 2010 FIFA World Cup triumph was soured by a 1-0 defeat to South Africa on Tuesday.

South Africa deserved to win at Soccer City in Johannesburg, with Vicente del Bosque s side disjointed throughout, rarely testing Itumeleng Khune in the home goal.

After a first half of few chances, Bernard Parker struck the only goal of the game, latching on to a throughball and finishing well, Nacho Monreal unable to save his side, despite an acrobatic attempted clearance.

Goalkeeper Victor Valdes had entered the game at half-time, but was forced from the pitch with a painful looking knee injury that forced him from the field.

Del Bosque made 10 changes to the side that edged past Equatorial Guinea 2-1 on Saturday, Xabi Alonso the only man ret…

French desperate to restore image

The French football season gets underway on Saturday with players and fans well aware that some remedial action is required to patch up its tainted image after a disastrous World Cup campaign in South Africa.

The national team had a terrible time on the field, losing two of their three group matches and drawing the other.

They also hit the headlines off it thanks to a one-day player strike caused by the French federation s decision to send home striker Nicolas Anelka after an abusive tirade against coach Raymond Domenech.

Not surprisingly the players involved, such as Marseille winger Mathieu Valbuena, are bracing themselves for a volley of abuse from the stands when they kick off on Saturday.

I expect everything, Valbuena told France Football. I unders…
