Villarreal v Barcelona: Marcelino out to end unwanted record against all-conquering champions

Villarreal head coach Marcelino will have to do something he has failed to do in 11 previous attempts if his side are to end Barcelona s record unbeaten run at El Madrigal on Sunday.

Spaniard Marcelino has gone head-to-head with Barca 11 times during his career and has yet to chalk up a victory over the Catalan giants, with just two draws to show from those encounters.

Moreover, recent history is firmly on Barcelona s side.

Villarreal, nicknamed the Yellow Submarine, have failed to beat Barca in their past 13 Liga matches, losing the last five.

Barca s last defeat at El Madrigal came in 2007 and Luis Enrique s men are on a 38-match unbeaten run in all competitions  surpassing the previous best in Spanish football of 34 set by Real Madrid.

UEFA to elect Platini replacement on September 14

UEFA will elect a replacement for former president Michel Platini at a meeting in Athens on September 14.

Platini was banned from all football-related activity last year, after receiving a disloyal payment from then-FIFA president Sepp Blatter in 2011.

The Frenchman, who continues to deny wrongdoing, has since seen that suspension reduced to four years by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), but they did not overturn his ban when their verdict was delivered on May 9. Following that decision, Platini confirmed his intention to resign.

UEFA has been without a president since the revelations and a new one will be chosen in September, meaning European football s governing body will not have someone in the role permanently during Euro 2016 in France, which gets u…

Will Liverpool’s Philippe Coutinho depart Anfield this summer?

Liverpool s Philippe Coutinho has been linked with Paris Saint-German and Barcelona this summer.

Liverpool midfielder Philippe Coutinho failed to rule out the possibility of leaving the Merseysiders this summer when recently asked of the alleged interest from perennial French Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain.

It seems clear he’s keeping his options open as his stock can’t be much higher, coupled with the deficiencies in the Liverpool squad likely to keep him waiting for silverware.

Is Coutinho too good for Liverpool?

The Brazilian recently scored a hat-trick for his country in their Copa America victory over Haiti, and is coming off the back of a good season at Anfield too. He swooped four club awards at the end of the campaign, while scoring an…

Guidetti: Nolito will thrive at City

As Celta Vigo star Nolito closes in on a much-hyped move to Manchester City, team-mate John Guidetti formerly of City himself says the former Barcelona man will thrive in England.

Nolito started all three of Spain s group-stage games at Euro 2016 and looks likely to become Pep Guardiola s second signing since taking over at City.

Guardiola has already worked with Nolito at Barcelona, handing him his Camp Nou debut in 2010 and Guidetti has no doubts about his suitability to City and the Premier League.

He is an amazing footballer, the 24-year-old Guidetti said following the conclusion of Sweden s disappointing Euro 2016 campaign, which they failed to win a game.

I played with him this year and for a striker to have someone like that playing on the wing f…

Liverpool 4 Barcelona 0: LaLiga champions humbled at Wembley

Liverpool dealt Barcelona a crushing 4-0 defeat in the first International Champions Cup match played at Wembley.

Jurgen Klopp s men were at their irresistible best against the floundering Liga champions, taking the lead through the brilliant Sadio Mane.

In the second half, a Javier Mascherano own goal against his former club, a Divock Origi strike and a looping stoppage-time Marko Grujic header added to a deserved scoreline that threatened to embarrass Lionel Messi and his team-mates.

By the time that Barca got to grips with Liverpool s dynamic attacking play, the game and the tournament was beyond them, handing Paris Saint-Germain the title.

A hip issue meant Daniel Sturridge missed out for the Merseyside side, making way in one of three changes…
